Online Marketing. One of the most popular and widely searched term in this high tech community. As the percentage of global internet user increase every day, without a doubt it will be the most effective business strategy in the world. With social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Tweeter continues to draw the world's attention, advertising in every other media will become obsolete.
But what is this online marketing?
Some consider it a slow poison to retire the good old business owners who consider the days when managing sales was just sweet talk a customer as the good old days. Others think of it as a golden opportunity to cut cost and increase in sales.
This article is to help those in the middle. Thinking of going online and taking advantage of this golden goose but having a hard time doing so.
The most common question, "What is Online Marketing?" is not exactly the right question. It should be "How can online marketing help me?" is the proper one. It will help you in two ways. First it will help you to remind your current customer that you actually exist and the great service that you provided. Second it will recruit new business for you.
The simplest way to explain is to divide the term in basic categories:
Email Marketing:

One of the best ways to help your customers find their way back to you. Collect the names and email ids from your customer. Even if you have gone through only one transaction, he will give it to you if he is happy. After you have collected a bunch email an offer or stock updates. Even if he does not make a new purchase, advertising is still invaluable.
Social Media:

If used correctly, one of the most powerful weapon at your disposal and the favorite of many. It can help you advertise to an endless limit of potential clients and increase your sales significantly. A few lines here can never explain its potential. To get started, open up a fan page of your business and ask all of your customers to become a fan. It can serve as media of stock updates, business status updates, collecting reviews and feedbacks, a valuable source of customer knowledge etc. etc. etc. The list is endless.
Forums:
This also is a powerful tool if used correctly. Think of it as a pool of all your targeted customer, having a conversation about the products you sell in general. That's a dream for any sales man. But you have to watch what you post, because comments are going to be soon to follow.
Blogs
It's an online diary for everyone to see. For an individual it can serve as a means to get his views out there. For a business it can serve as it point of view about anything. It will generate leads that you would have to convert later as sales. But this means it will generate interests which is a priority for any business.
The topics covered in this article are the basics and does not include the entire extent of the term Online Marketing. It's intended to give a general idea. But remember, the effectiveness of any type of marketing depends on the strategies they are based upon. On the next few articles I will go into the depth of each topic and a lot more.
